CREATE is an organisation set up in January 2008 in the village of Cherry Burton, to tackle the problems experienced in the village during and after the floods of the 25th June 2007 and the "near miss" of further floods in January 2008. Up until CREATE was formed, no single agency including East Riding of Yorkshire Council took any notice or steps to avoid the most vulnerable houses from being flooded again.
CREATE has a series of objectives but all of these culminate in the main one: we will not accept any further flooded houses in Cherry Burton.

On the 25 June 2007 over 50 households in Cherry Burton became flood victims. We believe that most of these houses need not have been flooded. The village is 5 miles from a main watercourse. A village such as Cherry Burton with decent infrastructure and drainage should never have been under threat of flooding, but that is exactly what happened.
Now the people of Cherry Burton have a voice. Nearly all of the members of CREATE were victims of the floods on 25 June 2007, and so have first hand experience of what being a flood victim is like and the physical as well as mental stress that this can bring.

The issues are wide and varied, but in summary are these:

• No single body in the UK has been set up to look at flooding issues and cure them
• Blocked or broken drainage
• Ditches that used to drain water have been filled in.
• Natural drainage has been built on and never reinstated
• Government policy regarding the attendance of Fire & Recsue crews at flooding areas
• The national policy on drainage between residential and agricultural land

This website has been set up by people in Cherry Burton for the people of Cherry Burton. Its purpose is to communicate to the whole village what we at CREATE see as the issues and what we are doing about them. There will be regular news, features, updates, a forum for residents to exchange their flooding experiences, links to other sites of Interest, and a facility to download any information which may be of interest to the residents of Cherry Burton. The site has been designed and built by Luke and Jamie at Cherry Burton based Azaei Design Studios for CREATE and will be maintained by them.
